Island Victorious Over City 21-14 in 2015 CHSFL Senior Bowl

In an exciting game the Island All-Stars overcame a halftime deficit and defeated the City All-Stars 21-14 Sunday at Mitchel Field. Ahmad Hernandez’s (Christ the King) 1 yard touchdown run late in the 3rd quarter ended up being the game winner for the Island Team.  The Island team opened up the scoring in the game when Quarterback Tom Walsh connected with his teammate from St. Anthony’s James Pryor for a 20 yard touchdown pass.  Team NYC responded quickly with a pair of Brian Vigo (Cardinal Hayes) to Brendan Lieberman (Monsignor Farrell) Touchdown passes, first a 9 yard pass to tie the game after a Liam Butler (Archbishop Stepinac) extra point and then a 22 yard hookup to take a 14-7 lead into the half.  Tom Walsh (St. Anthony’s) got the Island back on the board after a 1 yard QB sneak into the endzone and the Nick Malderella kick tied

CHSFL Semi Final Round Players of the Week

By Matt Diano: With only a win standing in the way of their respective teams earning a berth in the NYCHSFL finals, these four student-athletes would embrace the big stage and shine. Showing that there is no “one right way” to achieve victory, our selections would be evenly divided among the two sides of the ball. Representing the offense would be a pair of running back that combined to run for 446 yards and six touchdowns. On defense, it would be run-stopping galore as our two highlighted players would be instrumental in suffocating three of the top running backs in all of the Catholic League and keeping them off of the scoreboard. Recognized for their impeccable play during the semifinal weekend of November 13th-15th are:   Justin Covington; RB – Cardinal Hayes Cardinals Before the biggest game in program history, the Cardinal Hayes captains would honor the memory of departed teammate, Delano Cowan, by bringing his jersey with them

AAA Semi Final Preview

By Matt Diano: It is semifinal time in the triple-A division and playing this weekend will be more than a few familiar faces as three-fourths of our teams are back in the championship round of 4 for the second consecutive year. Up top, the unanimous top team in New York, Archbishop Stepinac, will look to win their 19th straight game against a downstate Catholic opponent when they square off against the team that on paper was not even supposed to be here, 5th– seeded St. Peter’s Boys…While the Crusaders cruised in their quarterfinal game a week ago, winning 50-3 over Chaminade, the Eagles would advance by the slimmest of margins, avenging a 33-8 loss from earlier in the season by claiming a 22-21 triumph over Monsignor Farrell in a clash of S.I’s finest. At the bottom of the playoff bracket, you have a game that will give Giants/Patriots a run

AA Semi Final Preview

By Matt Diano: Unlike the Single-A semifinal games, in the AA division, there are no clear cut favorites as both of our lower seeded teams have more than a fighter’s chance at pulling the upset. #4 Fordham Prep will look to take the next step in their attempt to pull off the rare feat of winning back-to-back titles in two different divisions, while #1 Christ the King will continue their pursuit of perfection. #3 St. John the Baptist will look to get to the title game after experiencing heartbreak in 2014, while #2 Xavier will be as hungry as ever to send the Cougars home with a sour taste in their mouths. #1 Christ the King vs. #4 Fordham Prep (Saturday, November 14thth @1 p.m.—Franklin K. Lane HS) A barn-burner when these two programs went head-to-head all the way back in week #1, the Rams would be a position to

A Division Semi Final Preview

By Matt Diano: #1 Xaverian vs. #4 Kennedy Catholic (Friday, November 13thth @7 p.m.-Aviator Sports Complex) After finishing as the Division A runners-up a season ago, Coach Mike Jioia’s Clippers have looked like an unstoppable force in their six games played against league opponents in 2015. Posting a perfect 6-0 record (officially 4-0 since two of the games were considered non-league contests) in these games, the Brooklyn based institution would go unchallenged, outscoring the opposition, 242-10, and pitching four shutouts along the way…One of these defensive goose-eggs would come in week #8 when Xaverian blanked Kennedy Catholic, 40-0, behind a three-headed running attack of seniors, Brandon Peterson (116 yards on eight carries and 3 touchdowns), Angelo Spata (84 yards on six carries and 1 TD), and Phil DePaulis (20 yards on three attempts, and one TD)…Defensively, the Clippers would be a turnover creating machine, forcing three fumbles (one of which

Player’s of the Week Announced from Quarterfinal Playoffs

The 2015 NYCHSFL AA and AAA playoffs would get underway last weekend with seven of the eight higher seeds successfully advancing to the semifinal round. In one of those odd coincidences that we could not invent even if we tried, there would be some elements of déjà vu on the list, as three of our five selections just happened to have been among the players chronicled in the 2014 championship round of 8 games. Another of our picks has the rare distinction of being the first offensive lineman of the season to be singled out and praised for his work in the trenches, as he opened up a plethora of holes in aiding his team in a 500+ yard game on the ground. Our final student-athlete plays for the lone team to pull an upset last week, as it would be his steady defensive play throughout and his spectacular play

AAA Division Quarterfinal Preview

By Matt Diano: As we approach the start of the AAA playoffs, we do so with several different emerging storylines. At the top of the bracket, you have “the hunted” Archbishop Stepinac, who will be looking to put the finishing touches on yet another perfect season against downstate competition…On the bottom, you have two teams with entirely different histories. Sitting at #2 is the potential breakout stars of the league, Cardinal Hayes; will their ascension to the top happen much sooner than anticipated?…Third-seeded St. Anthony’s is a program that has become accustomed to going all the way.   With double-digit championship seasons in the past 15 years under their belt, the Friars will have a chip on their shoulder as they attempt to shake off a 2014 semifinal loss and regain a crown that they feel belongs to them and only them…Could a team like the fourth-seeded Lions Monsignor Farrell, who played

AA Division Quarterfinal Playoff Matchup Preview

By Matt Diano: Are you ready for some Playoff football? After eight weeks of battling it out for premier real estate in the standings, our top-8 AA schools will now start anew, with only one program earning the right to call themselves NYCHSFL AA Champions in 2015…Here Is a look at this weekend’s opening round games: #1 Christ the King vs. #8 St. Francis Prep (Sunday, November 8thth @1pm—Franklin K. Lane HS) There has definitely been a complete 180 in Middle Village this season as the Royals, who entered the 2014 postseason as a #8 seed (losing in the quarterfinals to eventual champion, Chaminade), now finds itself sitting atop the AA bracket following a perfect 8-0 (7-0 in league) regular season…The league leaders in both total points scored (32.1/game) and fewest points surrendered (10.2), the Jason Brown coached squad has not been tested too often this season…Unfortunately for the opposing
