The following players earned Player of the Week honors from the CHSFL quarterfinals:

Tim Poindexter, RB, So., Cardinal Hayes – Poindexter had 340 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries in his team’s 41-20 victory against Fordham Prep. He also made a score-saving tackle on an interception, and Hayes got the ball back on a turnover two players later. As a student, he has also received first honors.

Albert Sutton, RB/LB, Sr. Mount St. Michael – In Mount’s 34-0 CHSFL quarterfinal win over Bishop Ford, Sutton accounted for 26 points, including and four touchdowns and 140 yards on 19 carries and a two-point conversion. The senior also played a solid game on defense at linebacker, helping his team shut out Bishop Ford.

Steven Bradley, LB/RB, Sr. St. Peter’s – The senior outside linebacker had four sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and six other tackles for loss in St. Peter’s quarterfinal win over Kellenberg. Bradley frequently covered Kellenberg’s best receiver and helped to contain the outside run. In a part-time role at running back, he had only two carries, but broke one of them for a 43-yard touchdown run.

Edwin Webber, QB, Cardinal Spellman – Webber ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns and added two touchdown passes in Spellman’s 39-35 defeat against Xaverian in the Class A playoffs.

John Antetomaso, WR, Kellenberg – Antetomaso played well in a losing effort, leading the Firebirds with nine catches for 114 yards and a touchdown. He also returned a kickoff 77 yards for a touchdown.

Naranda Itwaru, S, Jr., Archbishop Stepinac – The 5-10, 150-pound Itwaru helped Stepinac’s defense hold Iona’s offense to just seven first downs and one touchdown in the Crusaders’ 20-14 win on Sunday. Naranda contributed a big interception in the fourth quarter along with six tackles. He was also in on a scoring play, helping to force a momentum-changing safety for Stepinac.

Nov 142013

The following players earned Player of the Week honors from Week 9 action:

Christopher Monfre, LB/FB, Jr., Holy Cross – Monfre caught an 85-yard touchdown pass and also rushed three times for 31 yards in a win over Kellenberg. 22 of those 31 yards came on Holy Cross’ game-clinching final drive. On defense, Monfre made nine tackles.

Jonathan Joseph, CB, Sr., St. Francis Prep – In the Terriers’ 49-32 vs. Bishop Ford on Saturday, “JJ” had four tackles and three interceptions, with the last one going for a 97-yard return for a touchdown. It was only JJ’s second game back after missing five weeks with a broken collarbone.

Brian Harris, C/DE, Sr. Archbishop Stepinac – Harris, a three-year starter and two-year captain for the Crusaders, never came off the field in an important 28-14 win over St. Joseph by-the-Sea, which moved Stepinac into the No. 4 seed in the AAA playoffs with a 6-3 record. Harris made the line calls for an offense that piled up 300 yards and three touchdowns, while also anchoring a defensive line that slowed down St. Joe’s powerful running attack.

Nov 142013

The following players earned CHSFL Player of the Week honors for Week 8:

Shakur “Speedy” Bey, QB, Jr., Nazareth – Shakur was key on both side of the ball, going 5-for-10 for 110 yards with a touchdown at quarterback, rushing for 130 yards with a touchdown and a two-point conversion and making 10 tackles (6 solo) with a forced fumble and an interception on defense.

Greg Galligan, QB, Sr. St. Anthony’s – Galligan was 13-for-15 for 145 yards and a touchdown through the air, adding 28 yards on seven carries and a rushing touchdown as the Friars defeated archrival Chaminade.

Michael Greene, LB, Jr. Kellenberg – Green had eight tackles (two for a loss) and two interceptions in Kellenberg’s win over Christ the King.

Matthew Tierney, K, Archbishop Stepinac – Tierney set a new Stepinac record by going 5-for-5 on field goal attempts in Stepinac’s 36-0 win over rival Fordham Prep. Matt made kicks from 34, 26, 25, 23 and 22 yards out. He was also 3-for-3 on extra points and handled kickoff duties. Tierney is 27-for-31 on extra points this year.
