CHSFL Players of the Week: Week 9 – 2012

The following football players earned CHSFL Player of the Week honors for the first week’s CHSFL playoff action: Chris Cooper, WR, Iona Prep: Iona Prep’s senior wide receiver caught eight passes for 179 yards and scored four touchdowns as the second-seeded Gaels cruised to an impressive 41-20 win over Xaverian in the CHFL ‘AAA’ Division quarterfinals. Cooper and his Iona Prep squad will face off with the third-ranked Chaminade Flyers in the semifinals. Jackson Moses, DT, St. John the Baptist: The Cougars 6-foot-2, 249-pound defensive tackle shined on the defensive side of the ball with 9 tackles – 4 unassisted and two of them accounted for negative yardage. Moses also had two sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception return for a 60 yard touchdown in SJB’s convincing 62-7 victory over Holy Trinity. CHSFL Players of the Week: Week 8 – 2012

The following football players earned CHSFL Player of the Week honors for Week 8: Frank Calcutta, RB, St. Joseph-by-the-Sea Calcutta ran for 151 yards on 17 carries by breaking numberous tackles and scoring two touchdowns in a 34-14 win over Holy Trinity. His success came despite injuries to himself and his teammates that caused him to change positions. Kahiel Collier, LB/RB, Cardinal Hayes Collier, the senior running back for Cardinal Hayes in its 40-14 win pver Cardinal Spellman. The standout senior notched three touchdowns on runs of 65, 15, and 20 yards respectfully. He also compiled 12 tackles and had a fumble recovery. Ryan Burnett, HB, Archbishop Stepinac Burnett ran 16 times for 185 yards and scored a touchdown in Stepinac’s victory over Monsignor Farrell. CHSFL Players of the Week: Week 3 – 2012

Andrew Russo, RB, St. Joseph by the Sea The junior running back rushed for 184 yards on 31 carries and scored three touchdowns in St. Joseph by the Sea’s come-from-behind 46-35 victory over Xaverian. Russo played both sides of the ball on Friday night as he was the lead blocker for a rushing attack that ran for 367 yards and 22 overall first downs. Ryan McCann, RB, St. John the Baptist McCann, a 5-11 218-pound junior, shined for the Cougars in his team’s 33-27 loss to St. Francis Prep on Saturday afternoon. On the ground McCann ran for 143 yards on 19 carries and scoring 2 touchdowns. He also added 2 catches for 36 yards. CHSFL Players of the Week: Week 7 – 2012

The following football players earned CHSFL Player of the Week honors for Week 7: Laray Smith, RB, Xaverian Smith had 209 yards rushing on 9 carries and scored 3 TDs in a 53-12 victory over Holy Trinity. The 6-1, 190-pound senior running back helped the Clippers improve their record to 2-4 in league games. Brandon Violante, G, St. Joseph by-the-Sea Violante leads an offensive line that amassed almost 500 yards rushing against Fordham Prep and over 2,700 yards for the season. These numbers not only reflect his contribution but also the work ethic of the unit as a whole. The unit has helped St. Joseph by-the-Sea accrue a 6-1 record, good enough for fourth place in the CHSFL AAA playoff standings. CHSFL Players of the Week: Week 6 – 2012

The following football players earned CHSFL Player of the Week honors for Week 6: Christian Turri, RB/DB, St. John the Baptist Turri, the Cougars running back/defensive back, excelled on both sides of the ball in a 36-14 win over Christ the King. The 5-10, 170 pound senior rushed for 154 yards on seven carries while scoring two touchdowns on the offensive side of things, while on defense Turri had seven tackles (4 solo, 3 assisted) and notched two interceptions in the victory. Glen Kartalis, WR/CB, St. Peter’s Kartalis, a 5-foot-10, 145-pound senior wide receiver shined for the Eagles despite his team falling 27-26 to Cardinal Hayes. The Staten Island-native had 4 rushes for 56 yards, 5 receptions for 122 yards and 1 touchdown, good for 178 all-purpose yards. The following football players earned CHSFL Player of the Week honors for Week 5: James Drago, WR/DB, Fordham Prep Fordham Prep’s senior WR/DB was a force for the Rams in a marathon 40-34 4 OTvictory over Xaverian. Drago had 10 catches for 175 yards with two touchdown receptions of 20 and 4 yards each. In addition, six of his catches resulted in first downs for the Rams. He was also efficient on the defensive side of the ball, recording six tackles and an interception in the fourth overtime to seal victory. The following football players earned CHSFL Player of the Week honors for Week 4: Pete Mokwuah, DL, St. Joseph-by-the-Sea Mokwuah, a 6-foot-4 300-pound defensive end was a defensive force for St. Joseph-by-the-Sea in Sea’s 22-14 victory over Mount St. Michael. The standout junior record seven tackles in the win, including four that resulted in negative yardage for the opposition. Brett Bracco, RB, Monsignor Farrell Monsignor Farrell has something special in Brett Bracco. Just a week removed for a 99-yard, 2 TD performance against Holy Trinity, the senior running back upped his game by rushing for 145 yards on 21 carries and scoring 3 TDs against Kellenberg in the Lions 35-12 victory on Sunday. The following football players earned CHSFL Player of the Week honors for Week 2: Zach Kearney, QB/DB, Xaverian HS The senior quarterback carried the ball 35 times for 237 yards and scored 3 touchdowns in the Clippers’ 31-28 victory over Archbishop Stepinac. Kearney, a 2011 CHSFL Offensive Player of the Year finalist, accounted for over 275 yards of total offense and played a part in 28 of Xaverian’s 31 total points. Dante Aiken, RB, Bishop Ford HS Dante Aiken, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound running back from Bishop Ford HS had 21 carries for 151 yards and scoring 4 touchdowns Saturday afternoon.
