The Football Writers Association of America named two St. Anthony's graduates to its 2009 AON Insurance Freashman All-American Team. Defensive lineman Scott Vallone (Rutgers) and Kicker Nick Ferrara (Maryland) were honored at the associations awards breakfast on January 7th. Vallone a three time CHSFL All-League player was also the 2006 Joe Thomas Award winner for top CHSFL lineman and 2007 CHSFL Vincent O'Connor Award winner for the defensive player of the year. Ferrara was selected to the 2008 CHSFL All - League team.

Former Holy Trinity offensive tackle Matthew McBride has signed with Rutgers University. McBride a 2008 CHSFL all - league player moved to Rutgers in the wake of Hofstra canceling its football program. McBribe will have four years of eligibility after red shirting this past season.

CHSFL Inaugural Monsignor Matthew Peter's Golden Eleven
Annually the CHSFL awards the Monsignor Peter's Award to the top scholar athlete. This year the award was expanded to recognize the numerous scholar athletes of the CHSFL. This new award will be given to eleven CHSFL athletes who combine athletic talent with academic success. This year inaugural recipients were announced at the Championship Communion Awards Breakfast on Sunday, December 6th at Kellenberg Memorial High School.

Maurice Evans, Christ the King 06'
Catches on with Tampa BayAfter being released by the Giants Defensive End Maurice Evans was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Bucaneers on September 6. After the June NFL draft Evans was signed by the New York Giants as a free agent rookie. After he appeared in all four Giant pre-season games he was released. Evans declared for the draft after his junior year at Penn State. The Christ the King graduate will suit up in Bucs season opener against Dallas on Sunday in Tampa. On November 17 Evans was removed from the Tampa practice squad roster.

CHSFL Announces Television Deal
with MSG Varsity Network
Fr. Phillip Eichner, President of the Principal's Council, announced last week that the CHSFL had signed an agreement to have its games televised exclusively on the new MSG Varsity network. According to Multichannel News, the new network, "will cover events at high schools in Cablevision's service areas on Long Island and in Brooklyn, the Bronx,Westchester County, N.Y., Connecticut and New Jersey." Details concerning which games will be televised has yet to be determined. The new MSG channel will launch September 18th.

Trinity Duo Announces College Selection
Holy Trinity announce that 2008 All - League selection Matt McBride has signed a letter of intent to attend Hofstra University. McBride joins fellow CHSFL All - League selection Reggie Francklin (LB - Holy Cross) who also committed to Hofstra University. In addition, Holy Trinity Wide Receiver Derrick Johnson signed to attend the University of Maine.

Stepinac LB Ryan Hunt signed a letter of intent to attend Stonehill college in Mass on a football scholarship. Ryan, pictured with School President Msgr. Anthony Marchitelli (l) and Head Coach/Athletic Director Mike O'Donnell (r), was a two time first team CHSFL All - League selection. He was also named to the NYSWA All State team in his junior and senior years. In addition, Hunt was named to the Westchester Golden Dozen Honorable Mention Team and received the Paul Draddy Golden Dozen scholarship.

Four Xaverian Students Announce College Selections
Four of Xaverian's elite players announced their college selections. Quarterback Najee Tyler will play at Purdue come fall and lineman Oday Aboushi will attend UVA. Both Tyler and Aboushi were CHSFL all - league selections in 2008. Also, announced were the college commitments of CHSFL All -League selections Gerald Mistretta (Holy Cross) and Ethan Ostermeyer (Sacred Heart).

St. John the Baptist announced Quarterback Matt Pryzby has signed a letter of intent to play at Bryant University. Pryzby, pictured with Head Coach Keith Schweers (l) and Athletic Director Ralph Dalton (r), was selected to the 2008 CHSFL All - League team and was named player of the week for his performance against Xavier.

Announce College Commitments
Monsignor Peter's award winners Caraun Reid (Mount Saint Michael) and Chris Dooley (Chaminade) have signed letters of intent to attend Ivy league schools. Reid, who also won the CHSFL Joe Thomas Award - Lineman of the Year, has signed with Princeton University. Cornell, Harvard, Penn and Colombia were also interested in Reid. On Wednesday, January 21 Chaminade named Stephen Boyd to replace Bill Basel as its head coach. Boyd has coached at Chaminade for the past five years. Basel retires with a record of 125 - 87 - 1 after 22 years.

After coaching for 41 years Chaminade Head Coach William Basel announced his retirement at the December power rating meeting. Earlier in the day Coach Basel met with Fr. James Williams, President of Chaminade, and notified him of his decision to step down. Basel will continue on as CHSFL secretary. A successor has not yet been named.

Spellman Head Coach Joe DeSimone Announces Retirement
After Spellman defeated Hayes in the A Championship game Coach Joe DeSimone told his players it was his last game as the head coach. Despite howls of protest from his players DeSimone told them it was time. Coach DeSimone has coached at Spellman for the past eight years. He has led the Falcons to two titles, in 2006 the Falcons defeated St. John's for the A title. Freshman head coach Kyle O'Donnell was named to replace DeSimone.

Iona's #2 in Final NYSSWA Class AA Ranking
The 2008 CHSFL Champions were ranked #2 by the New York State Sports Writers Association. The Gaels, who finished 11 - 0, were ranked behind Orchard Park. Orchard Park, competing in section six, went 13 - 0. CHSFL runner up, St. Anthony's was ranked 14th. Xavier (8-3 CHSFL AA) was ranked #30 among Class A schools.

Iona's Woodson - Samuels Named Journal News Westchester Player of the Year
The 2008 CHSFL Champions continued to gain recognition for their perfect season. Junior Quarterback, Tyrae Woodson - Samuels was named the Journal News Westchester Player of the Year. Woodson - Samuels was also named to the All - County 1st Team. He was joined by teammates, Jeff Mack (Jr - RB), Darlos James (Sr. - WR/DB), Chris Alfano (Sr. - WR) and Nick Biagioi (Sr. - OL/DL). George Apostolopoulos (Jr. - OL/DL) and Jordan Reid (Sr. - OL/DL) were included as Hornable Mention honorees. During the season both Woodson - Samuels and Mack were honored as MSG Players of the Week.

Ferrara and Dooley Selected to Newsday All - Long Island Team
St. Anthony's Kicker Nick Ferrara along with Chaminade's Chris Dooley were selected to the Newsday All - Long Island Team. Ferrara will attend Maryland next year. Dooley, a defensive lineman, has not yet announced his plans for next year.

Defensive Standouts Teddy Clohessy (Sr. - DB) and Stephen Favale (Sr. - DB) were among the six St. Joseph by the Sea players chosen for the Staten Island Advance All Star Defensive and Offensive teams. Junior running backs Andrew Amato and Lyle McCombs were selected along with senior linemen Tom Alia and Mike Morano to the offensive team.
