Players of the Week – Week 8

XZA (11)Michael Chiarovano (Xavier Jr./RB)  – In a season where Xavier has been struggling to established itself in the AAA-AA Division, this week’s 21-12 victory over Mount St. Michael was a big step in the right direction.  Pivotal in the game was the play of Mike Chiarovano who carried the ball 23 times for 111 yards and both of Xavier’s offensive scores.  After a 95 yard, 16 play drive to open the game, Mike plunged into the end zone from three yards out.  Also in Xavier’s first possession after the half, Mike ran the ball into the end zone on an 11 yard run capping a 12 play drive.  As a matter of fact, Mike Chiarovano has had 4 100 yard rushing games this season, including the last 3 weeks in a row against some of Xavier’s best opponents, St. Peter’s, Monsignor Farrell, Holy Trinity and Mount St. Michael.  He also had Xavier’s only pass reception during the contest which was an important 28 yard reception to keep a drive alive.  Late in the game he also recovered Mount’s second onside kick attempt to help to cool there comeback in the 4th quarter.

Mike Cloppse (Monsignor Farrell – Jr./QB) – Mike Cloppse led Farrell to their 5th straight victory, 35-7 over St. Joseph’s by the Sea.  Mike complete 8 of 9 passes for 205 yards and 3 touchdowns and added a fourth touchdown rushing.

Jamen Williams (Christ the King – Sr./RB) – Jamen Williams rushed for 205 yards on 18 carries in the Christ the King win over Kennedy Catholic.  Williams had two rushing touchdowns on the day.

Cory Giordano (Fordham Prep – Sr./LB) – Cory Giordano helped to solidify Fordham’s victory over Spellman by rushing for a touchdown.  The touchdown run was from the two yard line.  What make this so special is that Cory is a defensive player, for the most part, and has only carried the ball twice all season.  This alone would not qualify Cory for the Player of the Week award accept when you add in his day on the defensive side of the ball.   Cory anchored a defense that stymied Spellman offensive attack. In total, Cory had 10 solo tackles and recovered a fumble.
