Players of the Week – Week 3

Braxton Moye (So.); WR – Monsignor Farrell Lions All in the family!!!!  We’re just four games into the 2025 Metro Catholic season; and already, the dynamic twin-tandem from Staten Island has each made an appearance on the POTW scrolls!!! Following in the footsteps of his field general brother, Bryce (Week #0 honoree); it would be the stud on the back end of those darts commanding the spotlight last weekend, as Braxton turned in a dominant and thorough exhibition in helping the Lions emerge with the decisive 48-13 dub over St. Peter’s in the battle for SI bragging rights!!! Both of his two receptions (for 65 combined yards) on September 19th yielding touchdowns under the Friday night lights; the win over the Eagles marked the first multi-TD snatch performance in the young scholastic career of the 6’2, 210-pound super sophomore!!! Wasting little time in setting the tone; the Moye-to-Moye combo took

Players of the Week – Week 2

Tyler Buono (Sr.); Wing-Back – Xavier Knights With all respect to the Spanish language; “Good” just does not suffice when it comes to properly recognizing the breadth of impact delivered by the Knight Senior wingback [Buono] in a 24-10 victory over returning AA-1 runners-up, St. Peter’s, last Saturday afternoon!!! An under the radar talent at the start of the fall; the Brooklyn native has made it impossible to overlook him the past two weeks; as he has set and then reset his personal-best for single-game rushing yards in back-to-back outings!!! Accounting for 127 yards of total production and two of his team’s three scores under the 80-degree sun; Buono abilities to function as an All-Purpose weapon was a defining factor in allowing the Blue & Maroon to improve to 3-0 for the first time since their title- winning season of 2015!!! Still riding the momentum of an 84-yard performance (on

Players of the Week – Week 1

Xavier Bala (Jr.); RB – St. Anthony’s Friars It is not by pure coincidence or fluke when a person who holds scholarship offers from the likes of Ohio State, University of Alabama, Penn State, Syracuse, Nebraska, etc puts on a show and leaves no doubt that he is the best player on the field regardless of the scoreboard!!! Thus far; despite the NYCHSFL returning Triple-A runner-up Friars mustering only a split of their two non-league contests; there is no mystery as it pertains to the supremacy of their 6’1, 215-pound junior stallion, Bala!!!  A season removed from posting a 1,009 yard/8 touchdown campaign on the ground as a 10th grader (5.6/per carry); the Baldwin resident has exploded out of the gates in 2025 and is looking the part of being a serious early contender for Riverso Memorial consideration (Metro Catholic Offensive Player of the Year)!!! Following up a then career-best

Players of the Week – Week 0

Daniel Breton (Sr.); NG – Mount St. Michael Academy Mountaineers An imposing force on the inside of the MSMA defensive line; the 6’0, 230-pound hometown kid could not have picked a better occasion in which to register the finest showing of his scholastic career… Shining under the Friday night lights in the first appearance of his senior season being a memory that will stay with him forever; there would not be many boxes on his personal stat sheet that went unchecked in the Mountaineers’ 30-14 victory on the road against the Gaels of Kennedy Catholic! Atop the totem pole in every category imaginable; Breton would accrue a team-high/personal-best 6 total stops (2 TFLs), including a QB sack early in the 1st quarter that drew first blood and put the Mount up 2-0!!! A consistent and unbridled menace for a D-Unit that collectively racked up three safeties (Kaiden Carmichael & Jomar

2024 NYCHSFL Senior Bowl Recap

On a moderately chilly Sunday afternoon where all donned a NYCHSFL jersey for the last time; and many put on a uniform for one final occasion period; it would be an imposing effort by the defense that propelled New York City to a 21-7 victory in the 2024 Metro Catholic Senior Bowl at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex!! The offenses on both sidelines stalemated for the entirety of the 1st half; the only touchdown recorded during the initial 30 minutes of action came courtesy of the NYC “D”, as it was Monsignor Farrell DB, Rocco Del Giorno, scooping the ball up in the end zone off of a mishandled snap to give the “Apple” reps the 6-0 lead (PAT No good) 3:05 into the 2nd quarter… Prior drives from each team showing some promise, but inevitably halted; monster contributions were delivered by the likes of Dixon Charzuk (LI; St. Anthony’s

LINEMEN OF THE YEAR

The namesake of this awarded being none other than former NYCHSFL President and legendary Chaminade Head Coach, Joseph Thomas,”; during his 40 years of service to the Flyers; the Philadelphia born gentleman brought a new level of toughness to the Metro football scene!! And “toughness” and “guts” are exactly the traits one needs in order to prosper as an Offensive and/or Defensive lineman!! As the old adage proclaims, “This game is won and lost in the trenches”; and thanks to the selfless and unrelentless courage displayed by these three “unsung heroes”, their respective schools relished in sweet victory considerably more often than they tasted bitter defeat (27-11 combined record) en route to all advancing to Championship weekend!! One of our selections a true “Ironman” who refused to come off the field; the other two serving as dominant Left Tackles who paved the way for explosive offensives that each averaged 26.5

OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Named in honor of the former All-Catholic Lineman/Assistant Coach at Archbishop Stepinac, Joseph Riverso, who tragically lost his life on 9/11 while working as a financial broker at Cantor Fitzgerald; like the gentleman himself (also worked as a bartender four nights a week), our 2024 recipients wowed us with their versatility and ability to impact the game in a variety of different roles… Following in the footsteps of recent past winners such as Rich Belin (2023; Cardinal Hayes; will play collegiately at Syracuse), Dante Torres (2022; St. Anthony’s; playing at Harvard), Ajani Sheppard (2021; Iona Prep; playing at Rutgers), and Matthew Sluka (2017/2018; Kellenberg Memorial; 2x Walter Peyton Award Finalist/2023 Patriotic League Player of the Year at Holy Cross); history has shown us that to have this honor bestowed upon you is a badge representing future success at higher levels of the sport… Each playing

DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

Named in tribute to legendary/ Hall-of-Fame Coach, Vince O’Connor (St. Francis Prep); if defense really does win championships as the saying suggests; then there is not a more appropriate namesake than a man who retired having won more games and titles than anyone in NYCHSFL history (341 wins; 16 crowns)… The award that perhaps carries with it the greatest lineage of future successes at higher levels of the sport; when we look at past selections such as former NFL players— Maurice Evans (2005; Christ the King), Gavin Heslop (2014; Archbishop Stepinac), and Trill Williams (2017; Archbishop Stepinac); as well as more recent recipients—Zyian Moultrie-Goddard (Iona Prep; playing at Syracuse) & Ian Strong (St. Anthony’s; playing at Rutgers); it is easy to see that correlation that exists between winning this trophy and then realizing your dreams… Comprised of two DL and a “Do Everything LB”, our 2024 picks “owned property” in

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE YEAR Whether it be a long kick return or a big boot in the closing moments for a game-winner; names such as Deion Sanders, Gale Sayers, Devin Hester, Brian Mitchell, Adam Vinatieri, Shane Lechler, Jason Elam, Ray Gay, Lou Groza, Sammy Baugh, Justin Tucker, and Harrison Butker are iconic… An area of the game that garners the least attention; but has every bit as significant an impact on determining the verdict; the ability to dictate starting field position or deliver clutch points at the perfect time is never to be taken for granted… The unit is called “special” teams because it requires a special kind of person to be entrusted to answer the call to duty when it rings!! And speaking of “rings”; it is not by mere coincidence that the stellar performances given by two of 2024 selections would be rewarded by the football
