AAA (Cardinal Hayes Cardinals) Kenneth Antoine (Offensive; Sr.; RB) In a decorated four-year varsity career ripe with individual achievements, the only thing missing on the resume of the 6’0, 190-pound tailback from Harlem [Antoine] was the team hardware to accompany all of his personal feats!!! Last Saturday night, in the final game of the 2023 NYCHSFL Championship triple-header on the campus of Fordham University, t#22 made sure that he checked that box as well, carrying the pigskin 16 times for 82 yards and a pair of touchdowns to propel the Cardinals to the program’s seventh overall Metro Catholic crown (third in the AAA division; first since 2019) behind a 30-29 victory over the Gaels of Iona Prep! In what may go down as the game of the year (anywhere on planet Earth), every second and then some was required to determine a victor as the hometown favorites from the Bronx [Cardinal Hayes] were able to hang on for a dramatic 30-29 victory over the second-seeded Gaels of Iona Prep, to earn the Triple-A title and lower the curtain on NYCHSFL Championship Saturday 2023!!! As evenly-matched a collision of two juggernauts as we have seen in quite some time, Hayes would find themselves down 29-23 with 2:23 remaining regulation; but then Rich Belin put on the cape and mask and did what true superheroes do!!! Marching his squad 80-yards down field in just over 80 seconds (1:23 to be precise), the 2.5-year incumbent field general from the Harlem inflicted all of the damage necessary
THE CATS CONQUER THE COWS!!!….NEXT MAN UP!!!! When the 2023 season started, St. John the Baptist junior quarterback, Maxwell Bowers, was listed no higher than 2nd on the depth chart (likely 3rd)!!! Fast-forward several weeks and today, the 6’1, 180-pounder hailing from Brightwaters finds himself bestowed with unofficial GOAT status following a tremendous individual effort that witnessed him amass 3 total touchdowns (2 passing, 1 running) as part of the second-seeded Cougars 28-14 victory over #1 Moore Catholic in the AA-1 finale on the campus of Fordham University! The win by the West Islip based program marking the fourth straight opportunity where the Double-A-1 hardware is headed back to Long Island (Chaminade in 2019 & 2021, Holy Trinity in 2022), for the Mavericks of MC, it represented yet another promising campaign that ended on a sour note, as they have now dropped the title game in three straight attempts! Congratulations to the top-seeded Mountaineers of Mount St. Michael Academy, who claimed the fifth NYCHSFL title in program history (1st since 2009) this morning behind a 34-3 victory over #2 Xaverian in the first leg of the Metro Catholic Championship triple-header on the campus of Fordham University! While not technically their final appearance of the 2023 campaign (they still have the annual Turkey Bowl showdown with Cardinal Hayes on Thanksgiving), the triumph on Coffey field served a two-fold purpose, as it not only erased the painful memories of the heartbreaking 29-22 loss suffered in the 2022 title contest at the hands of Xavier; but also had the added benefit of ensuing that 40-year Head Coach/pillar of the school, Mario Valentini’s final season on the sidelines was brought to a deserved and proper conclusion!!! Xavier outlasted St. Francis Prep to claim the 2023 JV AA title. The Knights defense stifled the Terriers offense to secure the 30-16 win. St. Francis finished the season with an 8-2 record. Xavier finished with a 9-2 record.
Archbishop Stepinac captured the 2023 JV league championship in dominant fashion. The top seeded Crusaders defeated Monsignor Farrell, 36-13. The Crusaders finish with a perfect 10-0 record to capture their third JV league title in the last five years. The Lions finished the season with an 8-2 record.
