CARDINAL HAYES CLAIMS 1ST NYSCHSAA FOOTBALL TITLE

By Matt Diano UP HAYES!!!! After unsuccessful bids in 2016 and 2019, the Cardinals of Cardinal Hayes High School can finally and proudly call themselves STATE CHAMPIONS!!! The rags to riches Cinderella story (2-8 last season; seeded 5th in the 2023 NYCHSFL AAA playoffs) saw its final chapter punctuated with an exclamation point earlier today on the campus of Columbia University as the CJ O’Neil mentored band of brothers emerged with a 40-22 triumph over Monsignor Martin titlist, St. Francis (Hamburg)!!!. The offense humming with the same sweet melody that it had at every previous stage of the fall campaign (came in averaging 39.2/per outing), the Cardinal & Gold were able to blow open a then 7-6 advantage in the 1st quarter by peeling off 26 unanswered points during the midst of the next 21 minutes to relish as large as a 33-6 cushion (in the 3rd quarter) before the

Xavier 2023 JV AA Champions

Xavier outlasted St. Francis Prep to claim the 2023 JV AA title.  The Knights defense stifled the Terriers offense to secure the 30-16 win.  St. Francis finished the season with an 8-2 record.  Xavier finished with a 9-2 record.

Archbishop Stepinac 2023 JV League Champions

Archbishop Stepinac captured the 2023 JV league championship in dominant fashion.  The top seeded Crusaders defeated Monsignor Farrell, 36-13.    The Crusaders finish with a perfect 10-0 record to capture their third JV league title in the last five years.  The Lions finished the season with an 8-2 record.

2023 CHSFL Varsity Finals Set

The CHSFL finals are all set!  Next Saturday, November 18th the championships at all three levels will be settled at Fordham University’s Coffey Field.  Here are the matchups. Michael Cunnion Memorial Trophy – AAA CHSFL League Championship (6:00 pm) (5) Cardinal Hayes v. (2) Iona Prep Fifth seed Cardinal Hayes has traversed two of the most difficult league sites to make it to the AAA league championship game.  Hayes (8-2) took on the fourth seeded Friars of St. Anthony’s (6-4) under the glare of the Friday night lights and dominated in a 42-14 ouster of the defending champs.  Next the Hayes took on top seed Archbishop Stepinac (8-3) and were able to stave off a late game charge by the Crusaders to secure a 29-26 win. JV AAA & AA FINALS SET

The 2023 AAA and AA JV championship matchups are set. AAA top seed Archbishop Stepinac (9-0) advanced  to the AAA final by defeating fourth seeded St. Anthony’s (6-4) 29-12.  Second seed Monsignor Farrell (8-1) shutout third seed Cardinal Hayes (6-4) 27-0 to reach the AAA final. The AAA Championship title game will be played next Saturday, November 18th at Archbishop Stepinac, kicking off is 10:00 am.  Both teams will be vying for the John Marchassalla Trophy which is awarded to the CHSFL JV AAA League Champion.  Stepinac defeated Farrell back on September 9th 6-0.  Monsignor Farrell will be looking to win back to back titles and claim its 8th JV League Championship.  Archbishop Stepinac will look for its third title having previously won the championship in 2019 and 2021. The top two JV AA seeds, (1) Xavier and (2) St. Francis, will square off next Saturday at the Aviator Sports
