IONA PREP WINS FIRST NYCHSAA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

By Matt Diano: Destiny has been fulfilled in New Rochelle!!! First the first-time in program history, the Gaels of Iona Prep are your New York State Catholic Football Champions!!! In the clash of the #1 and #3 ranked schools in the Empire State (per the MaxPreps polls), it was the hosts from the NYCHSFL building a 38-9 advantage before withstanding very late rally to upend Monsignor Martin representative, the St. Francis Red Raiders, by a score of 38-22!!! A fierce contest that was always more competitive than the scoreboard indicated, the Joe Spagnolo mentored cohort responded to a St. Francis touchdown (7-yard run by Pittsburgh bound Jimmy Scott) on their first series of the 2nd half that made the score 17-9, but stringing together 21 unanswered points between the final 2:00 of the 3rd and the first nine minutes of the 4th to seize the commanding edge! The major turning

Return to Tradition: Fordham Prep & Cardinal Hayes Victorious In Renewal of Turkey Bowl Rivalries

By Matt Diano: It just is not a proper Thanksgiving without one of the NYCHSFL’s grandest traditions, the annual Turkey Bowl contests between century-long rivals, Fordham Prep/Xavier, as well as the battle of the Bronx (Cardinal Hayes/Mt. St. Michael Academy)! Both series renewed today after taking a one-year hiatus because of COVID19 restrictions, and no matter the final scores, it was a welcomed treat to literally kick off our morning by watching four groups of fine, talented, scholarly gentlemen put it all on the line in honor of their respective schools!!   Fordham Prep-27; Xavier-13 In the 98th rendition in of one of the nation’s oldest and greatest showdowns, the Rams and Knights went toe-to-toe at Jack Coffey Field, with the hosts from Fordham Prep prevailing by a score of 27-13! Surrendering the initial touchdown of the game on 2-yard touchdown run by Knights’ senior, Nicholas Bruno (his 11th score

Recapping our Championship MVP Performances

By Matt Diano: “AAA”       Offense:  Ajani Sheppard (Jr.); QB – Iona Prep Gaels From start to finish of the fall (although the Gaels are not done yet), the 6’2, 230-pound 11th grader has been the most versatile and dominant offensive weapon in all of the Metro Catholic football league (regardless of classification) …What he achieved this past Saturday in Iona Prep’s 49-15 triumph over Monsignor Farrell was just the next act in what was a weekly pattern of dual-threat excellence and/or superiority! Quite frankly, if you are a power-5 NCAA program that paid attention to his junior campaign and still are not ready to extend that offer, then the loss/regret is going to stay with you forever!!! Leading the Gaels to their first triple-A hardware since 2008 (won AA in 2016),  even a leprechaun would have been envious of the standout in the #3 jersey on November 20th;

Iona Prep Leaves No Doubt in AAA Title Game

By Matt Diano: IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT!!! Last season, due to the restrictions imposed by Covid19, the Gaels of Iona Prep were deprived of their opportunity to win the school’s first AAA crown since 2008 (won AA in 2016)…Undefeated and punishing their foes to the tune of a 5-0 record that witnessed them outscore the opposition by a margin of 212-42, to say that it was inevitable that the gents from New Rochelle were well on their way to the hardware might be the grossest understatement in the history of sports.. That delayed privilege of celebration came tonight as the top-seeds lit up the scoreboard en route to a 49-15 triumph over #2 seed Monsignor Farrell in the nightcap of our Metro Catholic football championship triple-header!! Nearly flawless on both sides of the ball for the full 48-minute duration, literally the only thing that stopped IP on offense was

Flyers Repeat as AA-I Champions

IT’S A REPEAT IN MINEOLA!!! By Matt Diano: In the clash of defending titlists, it was the young gentlemen in the Red & Gold jerseys [Chaminade] turning in a dominant performance on both sides of the ball to ensure that the AA-1 crown will stay another year on Long Island!!! The top-seeded Flyers closed out the 2021 fall campaign with a 7-3 record as they knocked off reigning AA-2 kings, Moore Catholic, 43-7 in the middle game of our NYCHSFL championship triple-header at the Mitchel Athletic Complex! The majority of pundits would have predicted that any Flyer victory would be accompanied by a massive finale put forth by senior tailback, Christian Alacqua (60 yards + 2TDs on 13 carries; 2 catches for 23 additional yards)…But alas, while #11 certainly had his highlights, it was predominantly a group of unsung/under the radar heroes of competition, that carried the Marianist program to
